Tidus whistled the minute the ferry from Kilika appeared in view on the Besaid shoreline. He couldn’t wait to surprise Yuna.
Less than a minute later, he heard the familiar whistle echoing back toward him across the waves. Holding on to the picnic basket with one arm, he waved madly at the ship with his free hand, hoping that she could see him.
He grinned madly when he saw a slim, pale wrist wave back at him from near the deck of the ship. He couldn’t see Yuna’s face yet, but he was willing to bet that it was her. It had been a long two days, and now, in the last fifteen minutes of their separation, the impatience was setting in. Couldn’t that ship go any faster?
Finally, several agonizing moments later, the ship reached the Besaid port and after several more minutes that stretched like hours, passengers began filing off the ship, suitcases and knapsacks in hand. Tidus quickly spotted Yuna in the crowd and waved even more feverishly than before.
“Yuna! Yuna!” he shouted, eager to see her again. “Over here!”
“I see you just fine,” replied Yuna, but she couldn’t help leaping forward to gather Tidus in a huge hug. “How’d you manage?”
“Missed ya like crazy,” he replied, taking Yuna’s small bag from her and hoisting it over his shoulder. The garment grid made packing ever so much easier for her, and she’d often joked about getting Tidus one of his own soon.
Tidus figured he’d wear it so long as his garment grid came with clothes a little more manly than the ones on Yuna’s. Not that they weren’t nice and all. But Yuna made them look hot. He would undoubtedly not.
“I heard your whistle,” she said, grabbing her husband’s free hand as the two of them leisurely strode away from the docks.
“Heard yours too,” he replied, leading her way from the homes along the far edge of the island. Now that the threat of Sin was vanished, the people of Besaid were making solid homes of various sizes. And with the ban on machina lifted, these homes also had state of the art amenities, like running water and personal electronics.
“We’re not going home?” asked Yuna, curiosity seeping into her voice. “Why not?”
“Got a surprise for ya,” Tidus said, squeezing his wife’s hand. “I thought Rikku would come back with you. Didn’t she want to visit?”
“She said she had important business in Djose.” Yuna raised her eyebrows and grinned. “I think that means finally making moves on Gippal. But she said she’d take the airship from Brother, and I quote, ‘by force if necessary’ and she’d be by next weekend for a few days.”
“Okay, don’t need to hear about surrogate sister’s love life, thank you very much,” stammered Tidus, the barest hint of a blush touching his tanned face.
“Okay, okay, I’ll spare you further embarrassment,” Yuna said. “But you look so cute when you blush.”
“What? Cute?” Tidus looked a little crestfallen. “Just cute?”
“Cute,” repeated Yuna. “I wish you won’t nag Rikku about liking Gippal so much.”
“Cute?” Tidus was clearly not going to let this one go quite so easily. “Not manly? Handsome? Sexy?”
“I happen to adore cute.” Yuna was the one squeezing their interlocked hands together this time. “It’s part of your unique charm.”
“You’re lucky I’m crazy about you,” Tidus said, still embarrassed. “Anyway, this looks like a good spot to stop.” They were near the waterfall, and the day was cooperating, with clear skies and white puffy clouds dotting the sky.
“What’s the basket for anyway?” she asked, reluctantly letting go of his hand.
“I thought I’d treat you to a picnic lunch,” Tidus replied, taking a red and white blanket from the basket and lying it on the grass, within view of the water.
Yuna dove for her husband’s arms, giving him a gigantic hug. She them proceeded to give him the most appreciative kiss she could muster.
“I guess it was a good idea?” Tidus asked, grinning like a lunatic and wiping the remnants of his wife’s lip gloss from his face.
“Very much so,” agreed Yuna. “I like it when you try to be romantic.”
“Yeah, I’m probably not the best at that,” admitted Tidus as he sat on the blanket and pulled out food from the basket.
“This gives you epic major bonus points,” declared Yuna as she accepted the sandwich he handed her. She took a bite of it and made a little appreciative sound of delight.
“I’m glad you like it.” Tidus dug into the basket for his own sandwich. “I’m sorry I broke your favorite teacup before you left.”
“That teacup?” Yuna bit back a laugh. “Don’t tell me you planned this because of that. And anyway. I bought a new one in Luca. The shop still had them, can you believe it? I got two, actually.”
“Nah, I mostly just wanted to do this because I love you.” Tidus offered a carrot stick to Yuna, who nipped it from his hand with her teeth appreciatively. “I don’t think I show it enough.”
“You’re doing just fine,” declared Yuna. “And I love you because you’re you. But I will admit moments like these are good, too.”
“I’ll try to surprise you more often,” promised Tidus. “But you cannot expect me to get used to the idea of Rikku and Gippal together. I like them both well enough, but baby sister-type person! And good new friend! My brain can’t take it.”
Yuna gave Tidus a bemused expression and playfully rolled her eyes. “Who made lunch?” she asked instead. “It tastes like Lulu’s cooking.”
“Oh, yeah! That!” Tidus rubbed the back of his head nervously. “Lu kinda cooked it.”
She raised her eyebrows at the guilty look gracing her husband’s face. “And what did you do to my kitchen?”
“It’s fine, it’s fine!” assured Tidus quickly. This was going downhill fast. “Lulu and I worked out a deal.”
“Meaning she fixes your mess and you owe her a huge favor?” Upon seeing his browbeaten look, Yuna laughed and leaned back against him, her suspicions confirmed.
“Pretty much,” he mumbled reluctantly. “She said to keep next week open.”
“I think she and Wakka wanted to spend time in Bevelle,” Yuna said. “Lulu wants to visit Paine, and I think she and Wakka said something about wanting a vacation. I think you’ve just volunteered yourself to baby-sit.”
“This is going to suck, won’t it?” cried Tidus, his face slowly draining of all color.
“Don’t worry, I’ll help too,” promised Yuna. “It’s the least I can do after a nice meal like this, and all the work Lulu put into righting my kitchen.” She leaned forward and kissed him, pushing the sheer panic away from his mind for the moment.
“Well, just as long as we’re together,” he replied, trying to warm to the idea.
